Painted Egress Doors

This was my response on your blog.......

I wouldn't have a problem with the doors resembling the decor, but I would require exit signs, you could argue that there is nowhere else to go, but in a panic situation, the additional signage would help. The astragal would have to go. JMHO

Am I overly enthusiastic about them.. no... But I don't see an issue. The first set are black doors in a red wall, so there is some contrast. The exit sign is there as well.

On the second set there is no change in travel direction so I don't see an issue there. The big problem is with only one door operating on the second set.

What are you seeing that makes only one door open??

It looks like both white doors have surface bolts at the bottom

Code violation!!!!!!

Next time I go and see a movie I'm going to check the exit door colors by the screen exit in the multiplex, I think there black like the plantairum exit doors? If I do then I'll report back to ya!

I think it's more common than you think.

I'm sure they are, in our civic center I know they are, but they do have exit lights above, and E.M. lights.

1st door compliant!

2nd door non-compliant!

There is a difference with decor' and visual obstructions in accordance with the code we enforce (101). One can't paint a door to look like a bookshelf or drapes even when signage is provided. If an illuminated/secondary power supply sign were provided to door #2, I would not ahve an issue with it.

all four doors appear to have surface slide bolts at the bottom!!!!!!

is this a college building????????

Edit: Didn't enlarge photos previously :(

Correction- Neither sets of doors are compliant due to locking arrangements (bolts) for doors required as means of egress. Regarding painting, previous statement applies.

Hey Everyone -

I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to check back here until now...those are kick-down stops at the bottom of the doors, to hold the doors open. On the second pair there is an overlapping astragal that prevents one door from opening if the other door isn't already open. This isn't a college building - it's a children's museum.

Thanks for your feedback!

If you hover over the photo a caption pops up that says "only the right door works"

OHHHHHHHHHH

Subliminalsssssss

may be the explaination of the ""On the second pair there is an overlapping astragal that prevents one door from opening if the other door isn't already open.

Reporting back with the local multiplex theater exit doors to the side of the screen painted black on the inside as I thought. Also had approved exit light above the door.

I once saw a children's building where the owner hired a "theming" consultant to make the interior design more playful. (For an example of this kind of work, see http://wackyworldstudios.com/portfolio-stages.html )

Their theme was like the corridors on a freighter ship. The materials technically met code (they had the props plan-checked), but their murals had faux fire extinguishers painted on the walls, to look like a busy piece of machinery. They even had signs that said "in case of fire". The building offical had apparently approved the entire thing.

I suggested to the owner that they either repaint to remove the faux extinguishers, or else put real ones there.

For everyone who asked about the astragal, the very last line of the blog post says, "There’s a separate issue that’s impossible to see in the photos…one of the doors has an overlapping astragal, so only one of the doors can be opened when both doors are closed. If you push the touchpad on the panic device on the left, the door won’t open because of the astragal that overlaps the other door."

I added another set of photos from some other doors in the same facility: http://idighardware.com/2010/09/mouse-holes/
