Apartment building

with breezways, open on both ends, exterior stairs on both ends

built about 1998, maybe under the 1991 UBC

some apartment doors face into the breezeway, and some are on the landing, some facing the landing and some off to the side, as you come up and down the stairs.

Do the unit doors need to be self closing???

1. Back then

or

2. even under one of the 2000 or better IBC editions???

section reference

thank you

1. Lori likes self closing doors

2. Just wondering if the exterior stair provison kicks in requireing opening protection. 10 foot rule???

Ok Lori is not here to defend herself

Back to the story

The original doors have ul spring loaded closure hinges.

In the 91 UBC, if one were to consider the breezeway a "corridor" then they could have been enforcing 3305 (h) Openings. 1. Doors. .......doors shall be maintained self-closing or shall be automatic closing by actuation of a smoke detector.........

Do these existing doors and frames bear fire labels?
No

But, been through to many Code books and cannot remember in the past when solid core doors were accepted without labels ??

And possibly the ahj accepted them without labels

maybe it should have been attached to a couple of Ben Franklins ;)
Couple of Benjies? Would be cheaper to provide rated doors and hardware! :D

101 allows it on existing buildings in place of 20 min rated door
Saved myself a couple of Benjies!
