Greetings,

2009 IRC section 2603.3. In reading the commentary it only specifies metallic piping systems. Does PEX and PVC require this same protection when passing thru concrete?

Are you asking about the corrosion aspect, ...the potential for breaking

the piping aspect, or both ?

IMO, ...pex piping is a pretty forgiving and durable material itself.

That said, ...the potential for breaking it, because of a failure in the

foundation, would still be a concern for me [ RE: Section P2603.5,

`09 IRC ]

I would not be concerned for the pex piping regarding the corrosion

aspect, and all of the pex fittings I inspected have been wrapped,

...taped or been above grade when the concrete was placed........I

would not be comfortable with having the fittings exposed to the

concrete, and certainly not covered with concrete from now on.

The "pex" pipe may move within the wall or floor and over time be subject to a leak, IMHO I would "recommend" wrapping all water lines that penetrate a concrete or masonry wall or floor.

I would agree sleeve and seal or wrap.

I believe I read that PEX can expand or contract 1-inch in 100ft and I agree that PEX needs to be sleeved when going through a foundation wall. Horizontal support @ 32-inches.
