Plan Review phase for a tenant finish for a new "college" - B Use. Using the 2003 IBC.

Proposed platform/chair lift for accessibility on a small flight of stairs (6). Lift allows a wheelchair to roll on and take it to the next level. Lift can fold up when not in use. Will have standby power as required by 1007.5.

Questions:

Is the lift permitted to protrude into the required stairway width?

What is the required width of the stair with the platform lift in the usable position?

A) 44 inches (or 36) according to Section 1009

B) The egress width required by table 1005.1

C) Something else.

( I am asking for a co-worker who doesn't have a log in)

Thanks in advance for your help

Re: Platform Lift over stairs

Section 1003.2 - Protruding objects.

Section 1003.3.3 - Horizontal projections. "Shall not project more than 4 inches over any walking surface."

On the required width, ..."44 inches" or "36 inches", ...will need to know your occupant load for the

above grade levels. More than 50 occ. = 44 inches, 50 occ. and less. = 36 inches.

Table 1005.1 will depend upon if the building is sprinkled or not.

Also, see Section 1104.4 - Multi-level buildings and facilities.

Re: Platform Lift over stairs

My experience with these types of lifts is that the rail system usually does not protrude enough and is below the handrail. The seat will protrude but it should have a bend in the rail above or below the stair run where the seat will be stored out of the way when not in use.

The protruding object limits is 4” max only when it occurs above 27” AFF and below 80” AFF.

If the object is 5” and is below 27” to the bottom of the object or above 80" it is not a protruding object because it can be detected by the blind using their cane and head clearance is obtained above 80".

The calculated minimum egress width in the corridor above and below the stair must be maintained when the seat is stored and not in use.

Re: Platform Lift over stairs

well then.. no..

these things are usually installed adjacent to a required stair..

If the required minimum egress is required.. this is just like an elevator... nice to have, but not a means of egress..
