Does anyone have some good info for porch post use for bearing as related to the 2009 code. looking for some info for attachment both to roof and foundation. Like to have something for a handout. It would be for posts supporting just a roof.

Holding it up isn't really the issue. Gravity tends to take care of that.

Uplift on the other hand is much higher on porches and with roof only loads, the spans tend to be longer, and thus footings farther apart.

Did we ever find some answers / information on this topic? I have a Residential porch

project and am wondering about the connections of the framing connections at the

top of the posts.

Ya'lls thoughts..

Check out the Simpson catalog. Pick out the largest that will fit and still look good.

ICE,

I tried that! I went thru the Simpson-Strongtie catalog and directed

the "contractor" to the section for post connectors (He had the

*deer-in-the-headlights* look). This morning I get an e-mail with

some vague language about using an LVL to connect the post to

the roof framing. Sheesh! :banghd

Well around these here parts everybody and their dog is happy as clams to just use PL-400 for porch post base anchoring...me personally, I wouldn't touch that clam in nebraska.

There is not much prescriptive because now the code requires it to be designed in accordance with accepted engineering practice owing to brace wall section. As ICE mentioned for the top connections refer to the Simpson catalog or cut 2x4's diagonal or cross bracing to look like decorative finials. Same with the bottom; some examples found in AF&PA WDC1-300; HEY I just found a hand-out looking through my stack of stuff;
