Must industrial floor drains in a food processing plant comply with all the requirements of the IPC? Specifically, must all the trench and floor drains be individually trapped, or can there be one trap to serve all these drains? The process sanitary line is connected to a tank where pumps move the waste into mixing tanks for pre-treatment prior to being sent to the municipal sewer system.

Section 1002 requires a trap for each plumbing fixture.
Each Plumbing fixture shall be separately trapped by a liquid-seal trap, except as otherwise permitted by this code. The vertical distance from the fixture outlet to the trap weir shall not exceed 24 inches and the horizontal distance shall not exceed 30 inches measured from the center line of the fixture outlet to the center line of the inlet of the trap. The height of a clothes washer standpipe above a trap shall conform to Section 802.4. A fixture shall not be double trapped

Exceptions:
1. This section shall not apply to fixtures with integral traps.
2. A combination Plumbing fixture is permitted to be installed on one trap, provided that one compartment is not more than six inches deeper than the other compartment and the waist outlets are not more than 30 inches apart.
3. A grease interceptor intended to serve as a fixture trap in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions shall be permitted to serve as the trap for a single fixture or a combination sink of not more than three compartment where the vertical distance from the fixture outlet to the inlet of the interceptor does not exceed 30 inches and the developed length of the waste pipe from the most Upstream fixture outlet to the inlet of the interceptor does not exceed 60 in.
4. For drains in multilevel parking structures that discharge to a building storm sewer shall not be required to be individually trapped. Where floor drains in multilevel parking structures are required to discharge to a combined building sewer system, the floor drains shall not be required to be individually trapped provided that they are connected to a main trap in accordance with Section 1103.1.


Section 105 Approval allows modifications and Alternative methods, so a plan reviewer / inspector may possibly allow one trap for all drains.
105.1 Modifications: Where there are practical difficulties involved in carrying out the provisions of this code, the code official shall have the authority to grant modifications for individual cases, upon application of the owner or owners authorized agent, provided the code official shall first find that special individual reason makes the strict letter of this code impractical and the modification conforms to the intent and purpose of this code and that such modification does not lessen health, life, and fire safety requirements. The details of action granting modifications shall be recorded and entered in the files of the plumbing inspection department.


The owner does not want any water to remain in the drains. I do not know if that is obtainable by the code or not.

aren't they kept wet to minimize odors?

Yes, the water seal keeps the odors out. But the owner is asking if he can install one trap downstream of all drains so there is no standing liquid in the process rooms.

Thanks north star. I had not thought of food remnants getting stuck in the pipes.

Strainers are specified in the drains, but they will not catch everything.

The only allowance I know of is for areas subject to freezing. When this occurs the trap is not eliminated from the drain, it is just moved down stream to an area that won't freeze, and has no provisions for combining drains into a single trap. Doing that makes all the drains vulnerable in the event the trap is compromised. The freezing area provision may be the basis for the idea, but I don't think it is a good one either.

products \ other substances that might be harmful to
the AHJ sanitary sewer system, in this food processing
plant ?........Are there any plans to route wastes thru an
Oil \ Grease Interceptor before draining in to the sanitary
sewer system ?

The process waste is sent to an existing dosing tank where it is pumped into treatment tanks prior to going into the sanitary sewer system.
