Section 714.2.5 2006 IBC

Addresses the thickness of protection for masonry reinfocement but where in code does it give you the required thickness for protection of structual reinforcement in a masonry wall ?

I'm not speaking of coverage tables ( ACI- 318) but for fire protection since chapter 7 is speaking of Fire Resistance contruction. Table 720.1 does not address structual masonry walls.

ron,

The section you referenced only states how to measure the covering's thickness, and gives allowance for stirrups. I found cover requirements for reinforcement in reinforced concrete masonry lintels and masonry lintels in sections 721.3.4, and 721.4.1, but not for reinforcement in walls. Did you try ACI 530? I don't know alot about masonry, but I would think that if they have the same cover as for lintels, that would "cover" it (pun intended).

Let us know what you find out, as I'm curious.

ACI-530 doesn't address it all it does is refer you to the IBC. I spoke with UL and they could only tell me that the concrete protecting the reinforcement must withstand up to 800 degrees what ever that thickness that is.

With reinforced masonry you always get the face shell plus at least 1/4" grout, Ref Section 1.13.3.5 ACI 530-05.

Given the nature of the voids it is not as eady to control the cover like you can do in concrete.

I am not aware of any cover requirement for fire.
