The use of combustible piping materials shall be permitted where installed in accordance with the limitations of the International Mechanical Code and the International Plumbing Code.

The IMC covers plenum spaces, but the IPC does not cover this in great detail for Type I & II buildings, so I wondered if this is covered elsewhere.
 
Combustible piping requires rated penetrations. Non-combustible piping just requires the annular space to be filled to prevent passage of hot gases.
