Green is the most visible color at distance, red is the least; however red is most often associated with emergency.

Either works

This is the glow From a red Exit sign and emergency lights
Would you run toward it when the alarms are blaring?

I would prefer Green....

BUT the Code allows either

Europe requires Green

The code has required green a couple times in the past, but it went away after a couple code cycles.

The pictures aren't equivalent. The green sign doesn't have emergency lights shining into your eyes.

I know, closest I could find.
in a fire do you run toward the red or green?

The green has a different light pattern and is more easily distinguished from the light waves that may be radiating from a fire inside a building. the other thing is that the green exit sign penetrate thru smoke particles further thus providing better visibility and direction in the case of a fire.....case and point. how many fire engines or ambulances today only run red lights? None that I know of, they are all using a mixture of red, white, and yellow mixed in on the rear...
