The code section 705.10 pertains to the use of PVC plastic in drainage, waste, and vent (DWV) pipe systems. Here is a breakdown of the key points in this section:

705.10.1 Mechanical Joints:
  • Mechanical joints in drainage pipes must use elastomeric seals that conform to ASTM C1173, ASTM D3212, or CSA B602 standards.
  • Installing mechanical joints in above-ground systems is generally not allowed unless specifically approved.
  • Joints must be installed following the manufacturer's instructions.
705.10.2 Solvent Cementing:
  • Joint surfaces must be clean and dry.
  • A purple primer conforming to ASTM F656 is applied.
  • Solvent cement, not purple in color and conforming to ASTM D2564, CSA B137.3, CSA B181.2, or CSA B182.1, is used on all joint surfaces.
  • The joint is made while the cement is wet and follows ASTM D2855 standards.
  • Solvent-cement joints can be used both above and below ground.
  • An exception exists where a primer is not required when specific conditions are met, including the use of third-party certified solvent cement for PVC drain, waste, and vent pipe and fittings in nonpressure applications up to 4 inches in diameter.
705.10.3 Threaded Joints:
  • Threads must conform to ASME B1.20.1.
  • Schedule 80 or heavier pipe can be threaded with dies designed for plastic pipe.
  • Approved thread lubricant or tape should be applied to the male threads only.
705.10.4 Push-fit Joints:
  • Push-fit joints must conform to ASME A112.4.4 standards.
  • These joints should be installed following the manufacturer's instructions.
This code section ensures that PVC plastic DWV pipe systems are assembled with appropriate jointing methods, whether mechanical, solvent cementing, threaded, or push-fit, to maintain the integrity and reliability of the piping system.
