Simple question I hope. I have 6 wired alarms. No idea how old but more than 5 years and one doesn't work so removed. First Alert 9120B the one on my lap says. Any reason to not replace all with combo fire and CO2 alarms?

A month or so ago, I was awakened at 4:00 in the morning with my combo smoke and CO detector going off. I could not find any smoke, so I ventilated the house (I have an old whole-house fan, open the back door and turn it on. It was a cold night.) The smoke alarm was only one year old. The alarm's beep pattern was for smoke, but I could not find any smoke. I hunted through the house with my thermal camera, but I didn't find any hotspots.

The alarm would not stop going off. I reset it several times, and it would go off again. I did not know whether to leave the house because of CO or stay and hunt for a hot spot/fire that might grow if I left. When Home Depot opened at 6:00, I went and bought a CO detector and a smoke detector (separate units) and installed them. The old alarm was still going off. The new ones did not go off. The CO alarm's digital readout said 0 ppm, and has stayed at 0 ppm ever since.

I murdered the old alarm with great relish.

The moral of the story is that a separate unit for CO detection is really nice to have at 4:00 in the morning...

Attached garage, remote start the car while you make your cup of coffee, open the door to the garage and if the CO detector is in close proximity to that door you just woke up the entire house. Never use a combo unit near the door to the garage.
