Retention and growth of Sawhorses

I'm signed up through October 2016...if I make it that long...that's like $3.33 a month...cheap!

We still have 32 "former" Sawhorses that did not review. Only 1 contacted me to let me know it was not in his budget this year. The rest..................?

What can we do to get them back? I need to make some changes that will make being a Sawhorse a real benefit beyond that of a normal user. I have added quite a few things as you all know but I am not sure what else I can do other than remove regular user privileges. Thoughts?

I think on top of the sawhorses just do a quaterly pass the plate notice

We are passing the plate again and would like your support of the web site.

I just added a classified section and want to see how that goes. It was included with the last update from vBulletin. We will collect fees when items are sold and in some cases, listed. I am still trying to get it all figured out but there will be a percentage that we get based on sale price, very similar to ebay. Of course Sawhorses and Supporters will get a reduced rate. I think I will sell something just to get the ball rolling and see how it works.

I tried to buy it but apparently PayPal is the only way and it keeps asking for a password that I don't have. I went through this when I signed up for another two years and you directed me to the pay with a credit card button but that isn't there now.

Okay, I figured it out.

I think we're too generous in letting lurkers be on the site indefinitely. I'm with those that have suggested a fee after X number of visits. I feel like this site is an invaluable tool and have no problem paying a fee to continue to use it. There are some excellent discussions and debate that take place here, all of which can educate all of us in this industry. To me, there's no such thing as too much education when it comes to our industry. We could all use a little humility once in awhile too.

Try slowing down a little bit and read the page. There is a linked section below pay with paypal for you to choose to pay by credit card.Pink, for youView attachment 919

Any restrictions on what is sold? Just the typical Ebay / Craigslist type restrictions? Do the ads expire? One item or multiple items per ad? Feedback section for seller to rate buyer and vice-versa?

The usual restrictions, no porn, illegal stuff, guns, etc. I only have 2 categories so far and I don't think the ad expires at all.

The best thing to do would be to try it out like I did but unfortunately mine sold before anyone could see it. I think I'll put another one up with a ridiculous price that one one buys so everyone can see it.

Codegeek [ and others ],

I respect your opinion and input !....Having some sort of limitation on the

Lurkers out there is similar to the treatment that we members / Sawhorses /

and others received from ICC back when Jeff stepped up and created this

Forum [ read "Haven" ] in 2009.

I'm not sure that that is the best way in which to proceed.....I readily

agree that this Forum is an invaluable resource to all who visit and read

the topics, and even more so to those who actually participate.

Let the discussion continue...

FWIW, ...I agree with your statement about us all needing more humility.

A hit and miss, onesy-twosey check-in type, fine.... free.Someone that hits this 50-100-200 times, how about helping out? Forums as robust as this do not run for free. Pony up if you are using it at that level. JMHO

I have always figured that the forum would catch fire and take off. I suppose it's because of my enthusiasm for the job. I expected there to be many hundreds of inspectors out there with the same daily experience as mine. I thought that they would be here in droves wanting to learn and improve their skills.

Well they are out there and they are you....and you're not even one hundred.

Apparently we are all we're going to get. So I guess we will have to shoulder the cost. The eighty or so sawhorses will just have to pay the price.

We can't expect Jeff to do it alone. As it is, I'm sure that the forum takes up plenty of his time and to let him pay for it too is wrong. I do think that there will come a day when the forum is self supporting but until then, we haven't a choice. That's just the way it is.q

It's not about bells and whistles. It's not about privileges. It's about enthusiasm.

Screw asking strangers to like it enough to help with the cost.

Tell us what it's gonna take Jeff. Prorate it and let's see what we can do.

On the other hand, you could start killing off the engineers unless they man up.

I think I can do that with persistent messages.

Fatboy & ICE I have to agree. If you look at the members list of who has visited this thread you can see the core of the members that have even read the thread. We have many that have signed in, but never posted. The original concept was for this forum to replace ICC old BB which at times had problems functioning. The concept was to have a place to discuss code issues, raise questions for advise and promote a learning experience. I believe we have accomplished this with this site.

Keeping that in mind it does take work and time to manage the site. Coupled to that is the expense side which has grown with the quality and performance of the site itself. IT time, severs, and updates to programs cost money. I have watched Jeff rack his brain to come up with ways to cover the cost. Those of us that care need to also carry this cost factor to new members and those that have left.

Money is tight for us all, but without this site to debate and get feed back we will loose something that is so important. The site should remain open as free to those in the public, but I encourage all to support. As for me I will do all I can to support and sell what ever it takes to keep it alive and well.

For retention, is it possible to have a countdown clock somewhere on the page? "You have *** days of sawhorse membership remaining" I think I signed up in January 2013, but I am not sure. I can't find anything here. I would have to dig through receipts and budget reports to find out when I am going to run out.
That's a great idea.. an email might be a better way. Frankly, I've been so busy lately, I haven't been here as much as I should (and have been in the past).

this is my very favorite forum and I won't let my sawhorse lapse.. I just don't remember when it's due, either.

There are other avenues.. for example, if you do anything for building safety week, include this website in the literature... set up a display one weekend at a home improvement center and hand out free advise... and this website. It may be a one off visitor, but you may drag in some contractors, too. I've told some contractors to check out this website, since I don't know everything, either.

I may have been one of the lapsed sawhorses who just renewed in the last few weeks. I appreciate this forum and will toss some more $$ when the need arises. How short in $$ will this be? I have received great benefit from these discussions and will continue to support this.

On a side note, if this was a forum about planning or landuse, we could probably get a grant of some sort!

Is there anyway to allow bigger picture sized to be downloaded?

I just read all the posts and feel that seeking advertising is a good idea. I also think that asking ICC might not be a bad idea. Hell, see if they want to advertise here.

Anyway, I'm good for some more $ when it is needed. Let us know what you are facing, that might help us understand the magnitude.

Thanks again'

I just renewed my sawhorse membership... actually remembered my PayPal password on the first try, not bad for an old guy. LOL
