Hello all,

Trying to plan out a small cottage and would like to know how the max truss roof over hang is calculated. This will be an unsupported overhang over the exterior wall. Had heard its maybe 4' max in Ontario but was wondering if there is an exact calculation to get my max length.

Thanks so much

Also I can not add sq footage to the building as we are at our max for this secondary building

Trusses are normally engineered (there is a path to not have them engineered, but it is almost impossible). The overhang would be based on the design of the engineer.

There is no maximum contained in the code, there is just the structural design requirements. So, the code does not explicitly impose a maximum overhang, but there is a maximum based on engineering.

Your best bet is to discuss your plans with your truss manufacturer.

The square footage the overhang would add to the lot coverage is a zoning bylaw question. I recommend you reach out to your local friendly planning technician. In my area we go with 2'.
Hope that helps.
Have a wonderful day

Perhaps you could elaborate on your questions? Are you asking from a structural rule of thumb or allowable building area? There is no Ontario code limit for overhangs. It just has to be structurally capable of doing it. I have done 12' roof overhangs on cottages in Ontario, just has to be engineered to do so. But from a building area standpoint, yes some municipalities have a limit to which roof overhangs now count towards building area. This is not Ontario wide, this is lot specific zoning by-laws by the local municipality. Lot's of Ontario cottage country starts to count the area beyond 4' but that's not everywhere and not every municipality.
