Safety flim to meet safety glass requirement

Does 3M Scotchshield SH4clar, Sclarl 150,Sclarl400 and S35nearlutra high performance safety & securty window films meet the 2006 IBC safety glass requirement?

There is a Legacy Report dated March 1, 2003 by the ICC Evaluation Service, Inc.

Rick - You may be able to approve it as an 'alternative', but the film itself does not make plain glass 'safety' glass. What does the legacy repot say?

Hi John,

It says if the window film is installed as per manufactures instructions it shall pass the test requirements of CPSC 16 CFR, part 1201-77. Of Code Section 2406.1 Human impact loads: This code section requires that any glazing used in specific hazardous locations indicated in Section 2405.2

Last year at the WABO education institute, one of the presesnters, Steve Thomas of Colorado Code Consusting, said he researched and approved a 3M film that met the standard for safety glass. I'd been meaning to search for the product - thanks for the info.

Sounds like a reasonable approach based on the information you have provided.

In a high traffic commercial environment overlooking a deadly drop I might do a bit more investigation.

If there's a real concern get the sales rep on the phone.

We did recently have a Residential situation where the State approved adding the film to non-safety glass in order to meet the requirements (area around sunken hot tub was all windows and less than 3' from tub). They also required additional protection in the form of a grille.

Here in NYS Chapter 1 reads much differently than the rest of the country... Our State Codes Division reviews 'alternatives', with input from the local AHJ. Takes alot of the local BS/good old boy stuff out of the mix, and alot of the burden off of the local AHJ.
