The 2006 IBC deleted the old section 2409, and added a new one:

SECTION 2409 GLASS IN ELEVATOR HOISTWAY

2409.1 Glass in elevator enclosures. Glass in elevator enclosures shall be laminated glass conforming to ANSI Z97.1 or 16 CFR Part 1201. Markings as specified in the applicable standard shall be on each separate piece of glass and shall remain visible after installation.

The 2009 IBC expanded this section to include glass in elevator cars, as well as hoistways.

Do both lights of glass in an insulating glass assembly have to be laminated, or just the one on the inside of the shaft? I'm thinking that this section was added to protect elevator repairmen who accidently bump against the glass, rather than protection from something from outside breaking into the shaft.

From the 2012 IBC, Section 2409.3.1 - Glass types.

Glass in elevator car enclosures, glass elevator car doors and glass used for lining walls and

ceilings of elevator cars shall be laminated glass conforming to Class A in accordance with

ANSI Z97.1 or Category II in accordance with CPSC 16 CFR Part 1201.

Exception: Tempered glass shall be permitted to be used for lining walls and ceilings of

elevator cars provided:

1. The glass is bonded to a nonpolymeric coating, sheeting or film

backing having a physical integrity to hold the fragments when the glass breaks.

2. The glass is not subjected to further treatment such as sandblasting; etching; heat

treatment or painting that could alter the original properties of the glass.

3. The glass is tested to the acceptance criteria for laminated glass as specified for

Class A in accordance with ANSI Z97.l or Category II in accordance with CPSC 16 CFR,

Part 1201.

Paul,

I do not have access to the Commentary, but I would offer a guess that both

panels will need to be laminated, if it is part of an assembly.
