Screwing Subfloor and IRC 2015

Replacing subfloor with 1-1/8" OSB, and I am not seeing anything in IRC 2015 that permits use of screws for fastening subfloor. It seems like this is somewhat common practice, and I would like to use screws on the 50 year old joists... not 10d nails, for fear of splitting them.

I see IRC 2015 Table R602.3(1) Fastening Schedule, rows 37-39, which call out nails.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

R104.11 - Alternative materials, design and methods of construction and equipment.

Basically, the IRC gives you one way to do things, but if you can show that you have a viable alternative the building official can and should approve it. Screws and an adhesive to attach the subfloor instead of nails would be a perfect example, in my opinion.

Contact your building department and ask, it is probably something they have been accepting since before anyone can remember.

Using screws on subfloors is a common practice. Superior to nails against squeaks. You don't need permission to use screws unless there is a specific detail for a shear diaphragm that specifies nails ... in which case the engineer/architect would have to approve the substitution.
