Secondary Condensation Lines

Are secondary condensation lines required on furnaces with air conditioning in unfinished basements? The primaries are piped over to the floor drains but they leave off the secondaries entirely. To my way of thinking they should provide a secondary condensation line piped to a conspicuous point or a switch that will shut down the unit if it senses water.

2006 IMC 307.2.3 In addition to the requirements of Section 307.2.1, a secondary drain or auxillary drain pan shall be required for each cooling or evaporator coil or fuel fired appliance that produces condensate, where damage to any building components will occur as a result of overflow from the equipment drain pan or stoppage in the condensate drain piping. One of the following methods shall be used:

You are correct.

.......put a float switch in the secondary pan.

JayHawkInspector,

The float switches are what we typicaly see on the condensate line installs around here. The float switch is cheaper

to install than asking the plumber to run a secondary drain line.

What building components will be damaged with floor drains (I hope in the space) in an unfinished basement?
