Greetings to you all!
I am looking for input once again. In looking at Section 603 & Section 604 in the 2003
Edition of the A117.1 Standard, it appears as though these two sections are different
in their scope. Section 603 is for Toilet and Bathing "Rooms", vs. Section 604 being for
Water Closets and Toilet "Compartments".
I have an existing church that is constructing a 27k+ sq. ft., 2 story addition, with an
area on the 1st Floor primarily for Pre-schoolers. I am looking at the Unisex toilets;
for these Pre-schoolers, in these areas.
Some time back, there was a discussion on this Forum, regarding the Accessibility
requirements of the IBC & the A117, for Daycare Aged kids. I am attempting to revisit
that discussion, and obtain some clarity. See this link for the previous discussion:

The current design of my application has a single Unisex toilet room with one child
sized toilet and one child sized lavatory, between 2 Pre-school classrooms, in multiple
locations. These Toilet Rooms do not have any grab bars, and the WC is shown to be
at 12" a.f.f., and the lavatory at 18" a.f.f. The maneuvering clearances are o.k. I am
looking for guidance / input on the grab bars & to possibly be wheel chair compliant
(RE: Section 1109.2.2 in the 2006 IBC & Section 604.8 in the 2003 A117).
QUESTION # 1: Is the design of my application a Toilet Room or a Toilet
Compartment?
As always, please cite any applicable code sections for your input!
FWIW, I have not yet contacted the RDP to discuss this. I wanted to obtain input from
you all first!
Thank you!
