Not where I really want to be
We (the IT guru I pay) made some settings adjustments to our AWS server and deleted some backups, so this site should be faster than it was over the last few days. I had some speed issues on my end, but that does not mean everyone else did.

On another note, I am considering moving the server from Amazon (AWS) to Google Cloud to save some money and have an even faster site. I will let you know if and when that happens. We are still looking into it.

Super slow logging in and navigating this go-round. I'll try later and see. Could be unrelated. I'm personally also super slow today and that is definitely unrelated.

It's been s - l - o - w the past few days and is still s - l - o - w for me.

Edit - It has improved in the half hour or so I've been on today.

OK - Server had to be upgraded. We have been having, at times, up to 800-900 people on the site all at the same time, bogging it down. I had to double the number of core processors and RAM to keep up with the traffic we are now getting. The 106 Sawhorses are footing the bill for the 100,000 people who use this site each month.

Honestly, for the cost of a Sawhorse membership, which in my opinion is ridiculously low, supporting this forum is a no-brainer. Expenses are going up because of the popularity of the site. We need more people to step up and help keep this alive. For all of those who have been supporting us over the years, some of you from the beginning in 2009. I thank you.

Anyway, the site should be very fast now.

So the changes worked a little bit yesterday because there was a lull in traffic. It was not until today that we discovered that the spikes in activity was bogging down the system. This is why I had no choice but to double the capacity of the server to handle the load.

Super speedy this time (the forum, not me).

And thanks for the never-ending work on our behalf.

I wonder how many of these 800-900 people are real people and how many are bots. I understand that it's the reality, but it doesn't seem fair that we all (mostly you) should have to pay the price for it.

Right now, as I am typing, there are 8 registered members and 756 guests browsing the site. Those listed as guests are just that, unregistered guests who are checking out the site. At the same time, right now there are 460 bots crawling the site. They don't count against the server activity for whatever technical reason I am given. We only count people who have a page open and are looking at it.

However, our server counts not just members and guests online, but open tabs; therefore, if you opened up TBCF at home and just left for work without closing the tab, that counts as one. Get to work and open the site there, too? That is now two. Go to a jobsite and open TBCF on your phone? That makes 3 open at the same time. What also counts is this. Opening up TBCF on a tab and wanted to not lose your place, and opening up another tab? That is two right there. Due to this, the server is often at well over 1,000 pages open at a time which is a lot of activity. I am thrilled about the activity because it keeps us relevant. I just have to pay for it, that's all.

So don't sweat it. Just enjoy the site and don't worry about how many pages you have open. The members that are logged in make up a very small percentage of the overall use of the site, which financially has almost zero impact on cost. We just need more regular members to crack open their wallets and become a Sawhorse by clicking right here.
