Shipping containers as long term storage?

We are having a lot of these storage (shipping) containers popping up in the city. Some are from a leasing company and in relatively good condition. Others are from 'parts unknown', usually bought for next to nothing and may be of questionable structural integrity.

These containers are usually allowed and used as temporary storage during the construction activities. However these are now becoming common as long term storage anywhere they can be placed.

What are the AHJ's doing about zoning and building code requirements on these things.

Here's a link to some info about portable storage containers for the jurisdiction where I was the BO. This was something I worked on before I left.

We did not address temporary storage containers as you're discussing, but it might give you an idea on ordinance requirements.

We do not allow shipping containers at all in residential areas, commercial they are allowed as temporary construction trailers for 180 days at the most. If they exceed 180 days they need to apply for a new permit.

Similar to GB, we have ordinances for zoning which regulate outdoor storage, temporary structures and accessory structures. Most zones require similar materials to primary structures, or have a limits on temporary structures. I could post some of our zoning language if that would be helpful.
