if the drawing details the side grab bar in the bathroom 6" off the rear wall is that still compliant with ansi a117.1-2003 section 604.5.1 ?

the ansi says 12" MAX....so doesn't MAX mean it can be any distance up to 12" off the rear wall?

a pennsylvania (lower southampton township) ADA inspector asked the GC to move the side grab bar from 6" to 12" off the rear wall....

As long as the distance from the wet wall to the outer wall flange of the side grab bar is no less than 54" min and the side grab bar is no less than 42" min in length. The side grab bar's distance from the wet wall to the inside wall flange can be under 12". The industry does make L-shape bars that fit on the side and wet wall but the problem with them is the walls sometimes are not 90-degs to each other.

I agree, no further than 12" from the wall corner, can be closer to the corner as long as the bar meets the overall min. 54" from the corner.

If the bar is long enough to get to 54" then 6" at the other end is OK. Problem is that the bars are not long enough to do that, therefore they end up being around 12" anyway in order to get the 54".
