Can someone provide an explanation of how to calculate the required refuge area for a smoke compartment per CBC 407.5? I understand that the required refuge area is Non-A x 30 SF + A x 6 SF. But how do I determine the amount of "non-A" and "A" occupants? Also, are employees included in the "A" occupants since the CBC states "and for other occupants"? also, Does the total occupant load calc per chapter 10 have to be equal to "non-A" + "A"?

Welcome

Give a few days for reply, there are some Calif people on the site

Step 1: Determine occupant load per Chapter 10
Step 2: Determine the number of nonambulatory patients, which is usually one per bed. Provide 30 sf/nonambulatory patient.
Step 3: Subtract nonambulatory patients from occupant load determined in Step 1. Provide 6 sf/occupant for the difference.

Just FYI, the 6 sf/occupant does not apply only to ambulatory patients, but also to "other occupants," which means anybody else.
