I hope I can describe this well - I have a picture but not a URL to link it.

What is the specific code reference for a smoke detector hanging by its wires? In other words, it has come unattached from the ceiling and is just dangling by the wires.

I've read the IRC Part VIII a couple times but can't seem to find a specific reference. Obviously, it's wrong but I'm looking for a specific reference.

Thank you!

U.L. listing may also address how close to the ceiling the detector has to be located.

NFPA 72:

29.3.2 Fire-warning equipment shall be installed in accordance
with the listing and manufacturer’s published instructions.

29.8 Installation.
29.8.1 General.
29.8.1.1
All equipment shall be installed in accordance with
the manufacturer’s published instructions and applicable
electrical standards.
29.8.1.2 All devices shall be so located and mounted that
accidental operation is not caused by jarring or vibration.
29.8.1.3 All fire-warning equipment shall be mounted so as to
be supported independently of its attachment to wires.

Thank you for the references, it all helps.

IRC R314.1 General - smoke alarms shall comply with NFPA 72 and Section 314

NFPA 72, Spot-type Smoke Detectors, 17.7.3.2.3.2 - in all cases, the manufacturer's published instructions shall be followed

Easy to tie this right into the manufacturer's instructions!
