Sprinklers

We have an office building in the downtown area, the owner approached us about putting some living quarters in the upper level. We have told others with mixed occupancy he would have to have sprinklers. Are we missing something, other towns allow this? Also, does it depend how often the living quarters are occupied, I don't think it does, but thought I would bring the question here.

But has the IEBC been adopted, or is Chapter 34 of the IBC the only requirements you have for existing buildings?

The Building decision would be based on the applicable code, IEBC or IBC, but the Fire Marshal may have a provision or ordinance that requires the installation of fire sprinklers based on the occupancy change.

This indicates the 2018 IBC and 2018 IEBC are adopted by the state.

@DCON12, why are you referencing the 2012 edition? Is this project in a location other than Nebraska?

3401.6 Alternative compliance.
Work performed in accordance with the International Existing Building Code shall be deemed to comply with the provisions of this chapter.

A jurisdiction did not have to adopt the IEBC for a DP to use it for a project under the 2012 codes.

In later editions, this reference was moved to Chapter 1 since Chapter 34 was deleted. However, this does not prevent a jurisdiction from amending the code to eliminate the reference (e.g., Ohio's building code).
