2006 IBC, one story building with basement, Type II-B sprinkle red construction, non-separated mixed use. Basement 47000sf, S-2 parking garage, first story 47000sf of multiple M retail occupancies. Both levels are below the permissible floor areas for type of construction based on the M occupancy as most restrictive. Am I missing something......it appears no separation is required between the basement S-2 and the first story M occupancies. If there is no separation required, would the stairs between the basement and the first story (only penetrating one adjacent level) also have no fire resistive requirements? Thank in advance for your help.

Ken

Look at Table 508.3.3 again... Down the left to S-2 then across to M. One hour required between if sprinklered, two hours if not. That should also help to answer the stair question as well.

EDIT: IF they qualify as 'non-seperated mixed use' why would you even ask what seperation is required? 'Non-seperated' means no seperation required... :surr

khsmith; you are correct. No separation required per 508.3.2 if under the allowable area and most restrictive requirements of Ch 9 are applied.

Thanks JBI, you are correct, also Table 508.2 requires the same separation for parking garages. I KNEW there was a required separation, forgot where it was required. Thank-you again for your help.

I guess now I'm confused. If it is fully sprinklered, below allowable area, and meets the requirements for nonseparated uses, why would a separation be required? Did I misunderstand the question?

ref: 2006 IBC

If you comply with 508.3.2 Nonseparated Occupancies; then Table 508.3.3 is over ruled. Table 508.3.3 is only applicable if you have to use 508.3.3 Separated Occupancies.

Section 508 has three options that you must decided to use regarding Mixed use and Occupancy separtion if you do not elect or cannot use 508.2 Incidental Use. Texasbo is correct.
