STC 50 Dormitories

Looking for a load bearing partition type that will provide an STC of 50, required in section 12 of IBC 2012- the catch is that I need for it to be in the 7 1/4" to 7 3/4" thickness range, using 6" steel studs (16" o.c.). Any ideas on how to achieve this rating, given my constraints? Im at a loss- so is the technical department at USG and Owens Corning. The problem is that the wall type I/ they found online is for a nonloadbearing application (U419). Any thoughts anyone?
 
I would think a staggered stud wall would be able to meet your requirements.Although, a 6" steel stud and 5/8" drywall on both sides is already 7-1/4"Can you increase the finished width?

No particular design, but something full of mineral wool and resilient channel should be able to accomplish that.....I have always had good luck with the drywall companies literature.....

I meant to say: "stick with QR-ES compared to QR 528 and the other options that they had". From what I gather QR-ES is cheaper and lighter than their old stuff.... that's is all. I'm not a QuietRock representative, you can buy/spec whatever you want :P

Have you researched using closed cell spray foam insulation ?

Also, ...recommend that you research the National Center for

Physical Acoustics [ NCPA ] web site.......Also, ...Ole Miss has

an N.C.P.A. office on their campus.

I did a preliminary search for Acoustical Engineers /

Consultants [ in Mississippi ], and there appears to be an

acoustical consulting firm in Oxford, MS [ RE: Oxford

Acoustics, Inc. ]
