IBC 2009; 2 Story, VB Construction, R2 Apartment Building, NFPA 13R SprinklerThere is a center enclosed exit stair tower that serves as the entrance for two 1st floor units and the stair then provides the access to the upper 2 unitsThe architect is proposing adding a storage room on the 1st floor at a space that will be created at the distal end of the stair tower, located between two R2 units. This storage room will be sprinklered with NFPA13 and separated from the stair tower with 1 hour walls, ceiling, and a 1 hour door. This room will not reduce any of the required egress clearance. This storage room is not part of the stair since it is separated vertically and horizontally. Is this permissible? What is the difference between allowing the R2 unit doors to open into the stair tower but not a storage room door, so as long as all required ratings are provided?
