I purchased a kit for a continuous handrail but the handrail brackets are wider than the posts. The posts are about 3" wide while the brackets are about 3.5" wide round.

Any suggestions on making or buying a continuous handrail for these exterior stairs?

Thank you

Have you checked if the railing manufacturer sells handrails to go with their railings?

Can you post a picture showing how the handrail bracket in the kit attaches to the handrail?

You could consider mounting the handrail to the wall but my preference would have been to avoid putting any extra holes in the wall unless absolutely necessary. If you attached the handrail to the wall you’d have to make sure you have adequate reinforcing in the wall which might not be possible.

Like I mentioned in your original post....................attach a continuous handrail to the building not the guardrail assembly. much easier

Let me ask one of the guys to send me a photo of the bracket and post.

But this company Veranda Railings I have learned is just a Home Depot company or Home Depot uses this name. When I called them to ask if they have a continuous solution for handrails to go along with their deck railing systems they were pretty useless. There is another company that makes these continuous handrail kits and I think I am going to have to use a different bracket that is thinner.

This is the photo of the bracket and the post. As you can see it's about 3/4" wider than the post.

The problem with this is that we had to drop the railing because the inspector said there was more than 6" of spacing between the bottom of the rails and the risers. So when we dropped the railings we are right at 34" or a touch below and with this inspector I know he will give me a hard time about that. I was going to put the continuous hand rail just about the railings so we are above 34" in height.

Thanks for uploading the photo. This doesn’t look like something that could easily be modified. Plus, doesn’t even look like the screw holes are going to fit in the width of the post. I know you want this to look good so I’d try to find a different handrail like you said. Try searching online for “3” vinyl handrail bracket,” maybe you can find something with a smaller base but that has a similar attachment to the handrail.

With kit handrail-Guardrail systems, most manufacturer's usually have a kit handrail system that is compatible and provides a continuous handrail from landing to landing.

I would place the responsibility for the solution on the GC. if no GC then the handrail subcontractor who installed the original handrail in a non code compliant manner in terms of the 6" sphere at tread/riser. They solved that issue by lowering the system and have created another issue and do not have a code compliant installation. Have them propose a solution that will be acceptable to you.
