I’m shopping for the 2021 IBC and want to get a commentary, wanted to ask if anyone could give their opinion on which would be better:
1. 2021 IBC and Commentary, Volume 1.
2. 2021 IBC (standard version without commentary) + 2021 IBC Illustrated Handbook.
By “better” I mean breadth, depth, and overall quality of commentary offered, cost isn’t my primary concern for this addition to my professional library.
I have been using the 2018 IBC Illustrated Handbook for commentary. I think it’s decent, there are some illustrated examples in the book which have been helpful for me. I also purchased the 2018 IBC Study Companion but was very disappointed with that, I thought if fell short in delivering a useful degree of breadth, depth, and overall quality when compared to the Illustrated Handbook.

Sounds like Tim Mailloux is using both the code with commentary and the Illustrated Handbook. If I knew there was a useful amount of extra information in the Illustrated Handbook I’d consider purchasing both the code with commentary and the Illustrated Handbook. This approach is consistent with both the IBC code commentary and IBC Code Illustrated books.
