suspended MAU registers within a suspended ceiling grid

Since you are in CA and probably a seismic zone "D" I would think ASCE 7 would apply

Non Structural Components would include HVAC systems

Make Up Air unit

The acronym for that would be MUA. I did an Internet search for "MUA Register" and all that came back was things like links to Mauritius, or to registration for some conference in Las Vegas.

General rant: As a chronic curmudgeon, I hate it when people make up acronyms without defining them, and I have to say that this forum is where I see it more than anywhere else in the real world or the cyber world.

Nice catch, it didn't click with me that the A and U were backward.

As far as a Makeup Air register, the ones I see that are specifically designed for makeup air are the large boxes with perforated bottoms attached to the front of the hood, and typically supported with the hood. They are an accessory ordered with the hood. Everything else I see is standard HVAC registers and should therefore be supported the same as any other register.

808.1.1.1 Suspended acoustical ceilings. Suspended acoustical ceiling systems shall be installed in accordance with the provisions of ASTM C635 and ASTM C636.
The ICC ESR for the ceiling will most likely have a statement that grid will not support anything other than itself.
