I was an architect before I became a building official and, as an architect, I have always been interested in historic preservation and what some people call "contextual" design. I haven't seen the designs for the proposed replacement of the East Wing of the White House, but I am certainly aware that it is (shall we say) "controversial."
Many years ago, an architecture firm I worked for did work for the office of The Architect of the Capitol in Washington. So I know there is such an office. I had always assumed (apparently incorrectly) that the White House came under the jurisdiction of the Architect of the Capitol. I just read an article that seems to say that's not the case, It's an interesting read.
