This is a sewer replacement. They dug a tunnel under the diving board rather than remove it. The tunnel is about 10' long and no deeper than 4'. The second picture is where the tunnel stopped and you can see that the tunnel got smaller as it went along. The contractor explained that a man dug the tunnel; one 5 gallon bucket at a time. I asked the contractor if he thought that perhaps it was dangerous to send a man into the tunnel. He said "Sure, and that's why I tied a rope around his waist."

I asked him how he planned to put the dirt back in the tunnel. "Not a problem" says he "we'll use the bucket."

What would you do from there?

Once it passes they can pump 1,500# grout in the void; that will take care of the backfill settling.

I wouldn't have guessed that the first reply would be the one that got it, but you did. I had them pull out the pipe and wrap it with 3" of foam and then fill the trench with slurry which is 1 sack concrete. I inspected the foam and told them to install bulkheads on each end of the tunnel and get the slurry fill inspected before they backfilled the trench. They didn't get the slurry fill inspection and called for pre-deck around the pool. I made them dig it up and show me.

If I had mentioned OSHA to that crew, they would have thought they were going on a boat ride.
