From the Annex of NFPA13R. A1.1 - Where buildings are greater than four stories in height, or where buildings are of mixed use where residential is not the predominant occupancy, residential portions of such buildings should be protected with residential or quick respinse sprinkklers in accordancewith 8.4.5 of NFPA13. Other portions of such buildings should be protected in accorcance with NFPA13 Where buildings of mixed use can be totally separated so that the residential portion is considered a separate building under the local code, NFPA13R can be used in the residential portion, while NFPA13 is used in the rest of the building.
"Should" ain't "shall" and the annex ain't code.

Yes, there were major increases in tabular values in Table 503 starting in 2000 IBC. Big time. It did NOT change the concept of height and area increases, you just get to start with a bigger building.
Well it sort of did, since SBC had a column for spinklered and a column for unsprinklered.

But it was all full 13 since SBC didn't recognize 13R.

There was a learning curve for us in BOCA-land also, but for us the table is basically the same except larger tabular areas.

I may not know much, but I reckon I know the difference between code and something pulled from the smelly hole.

Easy gents. 8-)

Post Script: The use of the words "should" and "Shall". Should is a nice idea and not manditory. Shall is required period. The feds seem to use should in their documents such as the fair housing act. I must agree that "should" is P*** poor in code language. My 2 cents for what it's worth.

Now, please do not make any of this personal. 8-)

That's probably why the NFPA hired a team of rocket scientists to place it in the part of the book that isn't code.
