Greetings to all!

If someone uses heavy timbers; in this case 4" x 8" cypress beams, to frame a vaulted ceiling,

(in a Residence) what codes or standards can be referenced / actually used to construct this?

FWIW, ..the jurisdiction where this residence is located does not have an adopted residential

code to refer to, but has adopted the 2003 Edition of the IBC.

Thank you for your input!

.

4x is dimensional lumber rather than heavy timber (5x and up) so the design values are based on the dimensional lumber specs in the supplement to the NDS available on the awc.org website. Then the provisions of the AF&PA's NDS. As for prescriptive design, well, you don't have prescriptive design... how is residential done normally?

DRP,

Thank you for the information! I have a client that has numerous problems on a house purchase.

The overall condition of the house appears to have been misrepresented at the closing.

To whatever practice is typically accepted by the AHJ. In this case, it is the capitol city of

the state. They do whatever they want to, with no residential code adopted. Very few

competent, actual inspections performed, and even then, extortion is the norm. Another

Detroit, only at a smaller scale!

DRP (and others),

In looking at the AWC web site, they have the NDS for sale. If possible, I do not wish to

purchase anything at this time. Do you or someone else, have a free link or copy that I can

access, or another free source/link that I can research regarding the framing of the 4" x 8"

cypress beams in my OP?

Asked another way, ..I want to construct an open / cathedral / vaulted ceiling in a single

family residence, with 4" x 8" beams. Where can I go to find out the correct methods

of framing, types of acceptable fasteners, etc., etc., so that I can include the referenced

standard on my plans submittal to an AHJ?

Thank you for your consideration!
