This is from Ontario building code Division B:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.2.3.15. Wall Exposed to Adjoining Roof
(1) Except as permitted by Sentence 3.2.3.19.(4), if a wall in a building is exposed to a fire hazard from an adjoining
roof of a separate fire compartment that is not sprinklered in the same building, and the exposed wall contains windows
within 3 storeys vertically and 5 m horizontally of the roof, the roof shall contain no skylights within 5 m of the exposed
wall.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The wording of this clause is felt clumsy, and there are two "5 m" there. For the sake of learning, is there a better way to describe the requirement?

Skylights in an unsprinklered fire compartment cannot be closer than 5m from the wall of an adjoining fire compartment in the same building if windows are located
a) within three storeys from the junction of the roof of the first fire compartment, and
b) 5m horizontally from a point measured from the location of the skylight projected perpendicular to the wall of the second compartment.

Code ain't easy to read.

Pictures help.

Close, but the code restricts the windows to being 5m horizontally from the lower roof, not just the skylight.

Need to read some sections like 3 times to understand what requirements apply to what...

I think I've sorta made my point - that it's really (really) freaking hard to describe what the Code *intends* - better to use pictures.
