IBC/CBC 1024.1 says: "An exit passageway shall not be used for any purpose other than as a means of egress and a circulation path."
I'm working on interior upgrade to an existing building that was originally permitted with 2 exit passageways leading to/from stairwells and occupied assembly spaces and the public street. But could they have any or all of the following within the exit passageway, but outside of the minimum circulation path:
- Artwork on the walls
- Decorative pillars or pilasters
- A built-in planter
- A free-standing large pot with an artificial shrub
- Low-pile carpeting
- Wall paper (assuming it meets flame spread req'ts)
- An office/room directory
- A video screen directing people to specific events in specific rooms
