When that seismic support gets in the way

    the normal patient room has the cushioned window seat that can accommodate a visitor or family member comfortably. There is no design change to the element. Hope they never put me or my family in that room.

    I see this all the time on buildings. Consider the design alternatives:
    1. No diagonal braces, moment-resisting connections only. Very expensive, especially for an essential facility.
    2. Hide the brace inside a furred wall. No window, and you lost the cushioned seat.
    3. Build as shown. Not really usable as a seat for an adult, but kids will like it.
