My boss has asked me to find out what kind of Disaster Response Training is available for our department. What kind of DR training is out there at no cost? Maybe fema?

Anyplace else? We could travel to the training.

Any ideas?

We just had one a couple months ago in NO CO, talikng about getting another together. It is actually a CA based training, they provide the card anyway. Shoot me a PM with your contact info and I'll keep you posted, will also pass on the the CO Chapter's Chair of the Disaster Mitigation Committee, in case he knows of something in the immediate future.

Our local Chapter will be holding ICC's training When Disaster Strikes in mid-October if you're interested. We're in the Metro KC area. It's a two-day course. The fee will be $200 for non-chapter members and $150 for chapter members.

Otherwise the NIMS training on FEMA's website is a good place to start for free training.

Just wondering who your instructor is? We were thinking about that class for here in Wyoming and would appreciate any recommendations.

For this specific training, ICC has only two instructors, neither of whom I'm familiar with so I can't really recommend anyone. Both instructors are out of Florida.

Are you learning how to inspect damaged buildings or how to keep your people and the community safe? Big difference in training.

ICC course or free FEMA damage assessment courses plus free FEMA courses on ICS or command structure. These are for damage assessment.

For keeping safe look into local or state Emergency Management programs and see if you have a local C.E.R.T. program or other free classes.

The California "card" issued by Cal EMA simply means that if you are activated in California by Cal EMA that you will have access to workmens compensation insurance and some liability protection. In any other context it simply mans that you took the class.

If you are providing post disaster aid, that is not sponsored by your employer, you need to understand who will pay for any medical bills related to the response and what is your liability if somebody claims a loss because of your actions.
