With of Egress Door from Assembly Space

Where can i find the min door size for an exit into a vertical enclosure, the exit is calculated for a capacity of 160 people

The only thing i can find is the min needs to be 32" and a max of 48" as per section 1008.1.1.1 door width

Your help is appreciated

1005.1 Minimum required egress width. The means of

egress width shall not be less than required by this section. The

total width of means of egress in inches (mm) shall not be less

than the total occupant load served by the means of egress multiplied

by 0.3 inches (7.62 mm) per occupant for stairways and

by 0.2 inches (5.08 mm) per occupant for other egress components.

The width shall not be less than specified elsewhere in

this code. Multiple means of egress shall be sized such that the

loss of any one means of egress shall not reduce the available

capacity to less than 50 percent of the required capacity. The

maximum capacity required from any story of a building shall

be maintained to the termination of the means of egress.

1008.1.1 Size of doors. (2009)

The minimum width of each door opening shall be sufficient for the occupant load thereof and shall provide a clear width of 32 inches (813 mm). Clear openings of doorways with swinging doors shall be measured between the face of the door and the stop, with the door open 90 degrees (1.57 rad).

This is almost impossible to meet unless you use a 36 inch door.

I planned on using a 36" door, but

stair way width i got it will be min of 48", i am providing 60"

will a 36" door work?

160 ol x .02" = 32" Yes it will work with a 36" door

160 x 0.3 for stairs = 48” for the stair’s clear width. People go slower down stairs then through doors thus the 0.3 factor in lieu of the 0.2.

160 x 0.2 for egress doors/exit doors and level areas = 32” minimum. The door will be a 36” leaf and level corridors must the minimum of 44” per code [ref: 2006 1017.2] for assembly.

in 1017.2 it points me to 1008.1.1 but i can not see where the 44" is derived,

please advise

The minimum corridor width shall be as determined in Section 1005.1, but not less than 44 inches (1118 mm).
