New Landing at Existing Outswing Commercial Door

I have an existing 36" wide outswing door out of a commercial stairway, we need to add a landing on the exterior of the building ... I recall it needing have the 18" pull, putting the landing 4'-6" wide and a minim of 36" deep ... will someone please point me at the code section that defines these dimensions.

Landings shall have a width not less than the width of the stairway or the door, whichever is greater. Doors in the fully open position shall not reduce a required dimension by more than 7 inches (178mm). Where a landing serves an occupant load of 50 or more, doors in any position shall not reduce the landing to less than one-half its required width. Landings shall have a length measured in the direction of travel of not less than 44 inches (1118 mm).

If it is required to be accessible going in you would then maybe add that from ANSI 117 404ish...

The width of landings, measured perpendicularly to the direction of travel, shall be not less than the width of stairways served. Every landing shall have a minimum depth, measured parallel to the direction of travel, equal to the width of the stairway or 48 inches (1219 mm), whichever is less. Doors opening onto a landing shall not reduce the landing to less than one-half the required width. When fully open, the door shall not project more than 7 inches (178 mm) into the required width of a landing. Where wheelchair spaces are required on the stairway landing in accordance with Section 1009.6.3, the wheelchair space shall not be located in the required width of the landing and doors shall not swing over the wheelchair spaces.

Thank you Steveray ... This describes a stairway, the door in question is egress from a stair tower to the outside of a building which swings in the path of egress, I'm looking for the size of that landing separate from the interior stairway.

Your landing will need to be large enough to accommodate the door maneuvering clearance at the door, see A117.1 404.2.3. Figure 404.2.3.2 has something similar to my drawing below, this assumes a front approach to the door.


Check the A117.1 reference and apply the door maneuvering clearance that matches the approach direction to the door (assuming someone can re-enter through the door,) side approaches are less than 60” and have different dimensions relative to the strike jamb or hinge jamb.

Someone else will have to confirm the following statement, but if this door does not have a pull on the exterior side of the door (therefore the door is egress only with no way to open the door from the exterior) then you won’t need a door maneuvering clearance, you’ll just need to provide an accessible route to the public way - you need an accessible route to the public way whether or not the door is exit only.

I’d take it a step further. You could have a pull on the exterior side as long as the door was always locked, with keys given to the fire department (in the Konx Box) for emergency use; and some signs that say “Exit Only, no re-entry”.
