    Fire alarm requirements for F-1

Hi, For fire alarms requirements for an F-1 occupancy, which section should I refer to? IBC - [F] 907.2.4 Group F or... NFPA 101 - 40.3.4.1 If one takes precedence over another, where do I find the part of the code that spells this out? Thank you kindly for the help, Ryan

What's your favorite resource for researching the appropriate through-penetration firestop system to use with any particular assembly?

    Rating soffit/chase for electrical feeders

Nice, that mentally unlocked it for me. --- So back to the requirement of the chase/soffit in the S-2 (Type 1B) basement--one would assume the inspector did not think these penetrations had the appropriate fire stop system, and thus required the 2hr chase/soffit in the basement below.

    Rating soffit/chase for electrical feeders

Per the recent site photo below, it looks like the aggregate penetration is greater than 144sqin.--thus the reason, I assume, the inspector required a 2hr soffit/chase in the basement below. --- Another question, per 714.4.1, do those cables need to be steel, ferrous or copper conduits rather...

    Rating soffit/chase for electrical feeders

We have a 3 story R-2 (Type VB) over a S-2 (Type 1B) basement. Per 510.4 there's a 2hr floor between the occupancies. We have feeders coming into the S-2 basement, and then routing up through the 2hr floor. The local inspector is requiring us to build a 2hr hour soffit/chase around all the...

Membrane protections in a 2hr stair

According to the following code breakout, a 2hr interior stair can have membrane penetrations on the outside of the stair wall, if those membrane penetrations are within the exceptions listing in 714.3.2, correct? 713.1 General: The provisions of this section shall apply to shafts required to...

PVC roof drain/pipe coming down through a stair roof, and penetrating the stair's 2 hour fire wall?

If a unprotected steel pipe wouldn't work, would a pipe painted with 2hr intumescent paint work?

PVC roof drain/pipe coming down through a stair roof, and penetrating the stair's 2 hour fire wall?

It's a flat roof. Could we change the pipe to steel, would that help? Or, how about routing the pipe inside the 2hr stair wall? In that case, it would be a membrane penetration only.

PVC roof drain/pipe coming down through a stair roof, and penetrating the stair's 2 hour fire wall?

Is it possible to have a PVC roof drain/pipe come down through a stair roof, and penetrate the stair's 2 hour fire wall? My reading of Section, 1023.5 Penetrations, is a little ambiguous as it comes to this.

Can frontage increase be applied to multiple fire areas?

Thanks Ron & Ty That's t.b.d.--assessing whether existing walls are structural independent can sometime be hard to determine in the field. Any pointers, other than selective demo, to determine if the wall is structural independent? The particular walls that i'm looking at are CMU walls that...

Can frontage increase be applied to multiple fire areas?

Let's say you have (1) building made up of (2) fire areas--as illustrated below--all on the same property. When determining the allowable area of the entire building, can the frontage increases alloted by the 60ft setbacks apply to both fire areas, or would it only apply to Fire Area B?

exposed wood joists and stringers inside the stairwell

yes, the idea is to paint the joists/stringer/sheathing black--an industrial look.

exposed wood joists and stringers inside the stairwell

There's a number of detail examples in the following document that illustrate how to maintain that 2hr envelope as it relates to stringer beams and ledgers, etc. http://www.aia-mn.org/wp-content/uploads/E7.-Mid-Rise-Wood-Structures.pdf

exposed wood joists and stringers inside the stairwell

The walls around the stairwell are 2hr. I'm assuming the stair landings and stringers can be 0 rated in this circumstance.

exposed wood joists and stringers inside the stairwell

I have a 3 story sprinklered Type VB R-2. The stair wells have a 2hr enclosure. I assume, since Table 601 allows floors with 0 rating, that we can have exposed wood joists and stringers inside the stairwell, correct?

Painting metal beam hangers with intumescent paint

Using an approach like the following would allow one to demonstrate that the thickness of the wood would achieve a certain rating. https://awc.org/pdf/codes-standards/publications/tr/AWC-TR10-1810.pdf I think you can use a concealed hanger like the following in a fire rated assembly--as the...

Painting metal beam hangers with intumescent paint

A hanger like this. What about 1/2hr floor assembly? Would imagine intumescent paint provide enough rating? Is there a source in the code, or otherwise where I can understand how to approach this situation? Thanks, Ryan

Painting metal beam hangers with intumescent paint

For a 2hr floor assembly, if you use a large timber beam that is rated for 2hrs, can that beam be hung by exposed metal hangers, if those hangers are painted with 2hr rated intumescent paint?
