Rafter thrust and I give up

If the vaulted ceiling joists bearing on the interior wall had not been installed would the beam, that many are advocating, be required to support the actual rafters? Probably not but we really do not know because the picture is not showing enough of the roof construction. There is quite...

    New Roof Advice

No matter what type of roof vent you use you need at least as much soffit vent capability. You can not have to much soffit venting. Make sure you have a clear path of travel for the air to vent through the roof from the soffit.

Is it time for a new code organization?

Those who vote at the final action hearings are responsible for what the code is and what it will be in the future. I do not blame "special interests" for lobbying for what they perceive as important, but at the same time I expect them to have some semblance of ethics, which was completely and...

Re-elect Jim Brown to the ICC Board

Why are the energy codes being adopted by any jurisdiction? Well thats easy. Because failing to adopt will cost fed dollars. Tens of millions. It was Obamas way of creating jobs(energy testers of all ilk) and appeasing(somewhat) the tree huggers. Our current energy codes stink and they are only...

I agree with fatboy. And I do not need or desire an engineer for every detail that may fall outside of the codes' prescriptive content.

6-Year Code Cycle Proposed in Washington State

Please identify the ten most significant changes, brought about by products and/or technology, that made the three year cycle crucial for our job performance. Pick from the following code cycles; 2003---2006, 2006--2009, 2009---2012

    ADA T-stat height

Better question; Why do some always try to interpret the code to be more restrictive than it actually is?
  12. I

    ADA T-stat height

Correct. That is the exact response given by an ADA instructor at a seminar that I attended a while back. If it located in a locked box that is controlled by maintenance staff that must be ambulatory to perform their daily duties, the thermostat can be located above the normal 48" max reach...

    Deck Foundation Sizing Survey

Standard practice in my area is a 8" diameter hole, 42" deep filled with concrete with post anchored to top. Soil conditions range from sand to clay. I have yet to see any pier footing of this design fail in any way. If this type of BS finds a way into the 2015 IRC/IBC it will only be another...

How long to do an inspection

As expected. It defies logic to think that an electrical inspector, for example, who has done nothing but electrical inspections for the last 20 years is not going to be more competent than a combination inspector who must divide his attention and continuing ed on several trades over the same...

How long to do an inspection

If the inspection is trade specific and looking at only one, maybe two trades, you should be able to complete a fairly comprehensive rough-in or final in not more than 20 minutes. If you are doing multiple inspections--or all--as a combination inspector(Jack-of-all-trades, master of none), you...

    Smoke detectors

The fanatical RFS bunch must be a blissful group as they march in unison to the whim of NFPA and NFSA. Considering that the 2009 codes sold so poorly and the 2012 are not doing much better it is very clear what jurisdictions and legitimate code officials think of RFS. It is reprehensible that a...

New ICC Board of Directors member...

Personally I liked the booth idea and heard very positive comments. That simple effort demonstrated a willingness to be more accessible to the membership than any board member or potential board member ever has. I would expect to see that idea copied in the future. The resume was different from...

So what is right and what is wrong with the ICC?

And then the actual ISO score. You think it is a big deal that you get a "4". The scores, as they relate to insurance rates, are in a range. So a community scoring a "4" gets the same rate as a community scoring a "6". As I recall it something like 1-3, 4-6, 7-9 and above nine is basically a NR.

So what is right and what is wrong with the ICC?

Once you research ISO you will learn what a waste of time they actually are. First gem of info---your ISO score only applies to those projects which you permit from your new score date until your next ISO review.

So what is right and what is wrong with the ICC?

And that would be the cycle of the IRC that your jurisdiction has adopted.

So what is right and what is wrong with the ICC?

I shall reserve judgement until I hear the position of all candidates in Portland. For the most part I approve of both jpranch and Min&Max but it would seem a bit shortsighted to not seriously consider all candidates who are running for these important positions. I really dislike those chapters...

So what is right and what is wrong with the ICC?

So how many new products or techniques are actually specifically identified and addressed by an ICC code? Feel free to use any code cycle since 2000 as an example.
