I had not seen a C-tap in use prior to the solar industry's misuse of C-taps,

Two wire maximum and there is a chart for selecting the correct tap for the wire sizes to be spliced.

Manufactures have a tool for crimping the tap. Pliers is not that tool.

Examples like these cause me to question everything about the project just a little more.
