I'm working with an architect on confirming the rating for a door leading into a commercial kitchen from a dining room. He specified a standard grade 0 hour rated door with standard glass. I didn't approve the specifications and sent notes back after plan review that said the door should have fire rated ceramic glass. He's insistent that the door doesn't need to be fire rated or need to have fire rated glass. It's a commercial building with a dining room and kitchen. He also specified that the walls for the kitchen separating dining from kitchen can be zero hour rated. I'm searching for references in the code to confirm.

The kitchen is an A-2 under the IBC

303.3 Assembly Group A-2.
Group A-2 occupancy includes assembly uses intended for food and/or drink consumption including, but not limited to:

Banquet halls

Casinos (gaming areas)

Nightclubs

Restaurants, cafeterias and similar dining facilities (including associated commercial kitchens)

So how about an update on this from over a year ago, please.

The fire rating required for a door in a commercial kitchen is not less than 3/4 hour, and it must be self-closing or automatic-closing by smoke detection as per the 2020 Fire Code of New York State Chapter 07, Sections 704.2 and 705.2.5.

704.2 doesn't require a rating. It says when an opening must be protected, the opening protective must be self-closing.

705.2.5 also does not require any specific rating at any specific location. This section also simply requires that smoke-activated doors shall close automatically upon detection of smoke.

Kitchens serving restaurants are considered to be part of the A-2 restaurant occupancy and no fire separation is required. Therefore, the doors between the kitchen and the dining room don't require a rating.
