Decorative balusters for stair guards

where exactly do you guys measure the 4-3/8" opening when decorative balusters are used? (Narrowest point, widest point, tread level?).

curious because we've had some discussion; as I recall, the 4-3/8" came in over the 4" at stairs because of tread depth.

measure at the widest point. The 4 3/8 is a minimum that needs to be maintained at all points in the stair guard rail assembly. IMO

Between the spindles at the widest point. This is only a minimum, spindles can be closer. If using pool cue spindles, it most likely will take three on each step. Decorative could mean even a smaller spindle being used requiring more spindles on a rail system. (ie 1/2" metal tubing)

Does the measurement change between the 2006 and 2009 I-code?

Agree - Widest point. No the measurement doesn't change in the 09 IRC.

Agree with all the previous posts. Yes, it was a change driven by the change in tread depth, and how it related to layout of typical balusters, 2 vs. three very narrow. Supported by the fact that children would not spend as much time on a tread, vs. a landing or floor level, hence the opportunity to work themselves through the opening lessens.

The 4-3/8" is measured the same as the 4" sphere, the sphere is just larger in this area.

I am not sure what more one would need to add, I thought I got it right.
