F-2 question.

F2 does need sprinklers if VB construction and more than 13,000 sq ft. or more than 2 stories.

On a different thread, we discussed trying the AI navigator out. I thought this question would be an interesting test of it.
As you can see, the answer regarding the classification did not generate whether it was an F1 or F2. The answer also does not consider any amounts of gases which might needed to be determined for an H consideration. However, by answering the 2nd question it would appear that it is classifying a welding shop as an F2.

Depends on what you are welding. I worked a year in a "weld shop" repairing damaged tanker trailers that hauled various fuels in them.

Judgment call, I guess. Welding involves flames and big sparks. There's no way I'm classifying a welding shop as a "low-hazard" anything.
Having spent a lot of time in fab shops (welding SI), the amount of stored combustible products is very low. Yes, there is a significant potential for ignition given the sparks, heat, etc. However, the flammable gases and materials are well known and addressed through fairly rigorous safety protocols, often via OSHA regulations. As you think about the occupancy classification and the associated hazards, be mindful to think not only about the function of the space but also the products that would be likely to be stored/manufactured/used within the space.
