Does anyone know if the spatial separation and limiting distance apply to rear yard garden suites between the garden suite and the main house? (I'm in Ontario). In part 3 this is normal to do between buildings on the same lot however garden suites in the rear yard of a house are under part 9 which doesn't seem to cover this yet. Anyone have experience with this? I feel it should apply however I also feel if it does, no modern subdivision would ever meet the requirements as the rear is usually the only place for substantial glazing due to narrow lots.

There does not appear to be any exceptions based on a quick review of the OBC.

Theoretically the garden suite could have rated construction and limited openings to move the line closer to the garden suite, to allow the existing dwelling to remain unchanged. However, this remains a situation by situation type of evaluation.

A garden suite is a separate single-family dwelling; the provisions of 9.10.15 apply.

Thanks for the reply. I believe that might be from and older text? The current volume for 9.10.15.1 is just:
9.10.15.1. Application

(1) This Subsection applies to houses that are not designed in accordance with Subsection 9.10.14.

Regardless it doesn't really answer the questions. Correct it is a "house" and thus 9.10.15 is able to apply instead of 9.10.14 however neither have provisions for building to building on the same lot like part 3 has. So yes 9.10.15 can be used for the garden suite to the side and rear lot lines but are there any requirement for the building face of the main house and garden suite that face each other? It seems there is no requirement and limit for this other than to the property line. Seem like the garden suite front wall would have limiting distance to the road center line which doesn't seem logical. Seems like it's an oversight.

Apologies, I figured it out! It does in fact apply to an imaginary line between the buildings. No where in part 9 is this options mentioned however it is mentioned in the definitions which I should have gone to first. Silly of me. Thanks everyone!

I quoted NBC, not OBC. But you're looking in the wrong spot for guidance: it's in the definition of limiting distance in both NBC and OBC.
