Type I Hood Service Clearance

Do you now require the 30 inch clearance in front of the fire suppression cabinet?

Manufacturer only has 18 inches to combustibles.

New for 2009 IMC;

306.1 Access for maintenance and replacement. Appliances

shall be accessible for inspection, service, repair and replacement

without disabling the function of a fire-resistance-rated

assembly or removing permanent construction, other appliances,

venting systems or any other piping or ducts not connected

to the appliance being inspected, serviced, repaired or

replaced. A level working space at least 30 inches deep and 30

inches wide (762 mm by 762 mm) shall be provided in front of

the control side to service an appliance.

I can't get there either, not sure I could get there with the definition, but do not think the section applies to hoods. JMHO
 
Are you asking about the hood, or the exhaust equipment? As I read it, everything you need should be in 506 (506.3.6 through 506.3.11). In my opinion, the Section you quoted would apply to the exhaust fans (equipment), while hoods, ducts and plenums comprise non-equipment components in the Type I exhaust system. The exhaust equipment (fan and grease resevoir) clearances required are listed in Section 506.5.4, with exception for factory built systems installed in accordance with 304.1. I find nothing in 506 or 507 that would reference the clearances in 306 for the hood itself.

306.1 should not apply to vent a hoods
 
You are reading to much into the equations. Often a hood could have an access for cleaning above the ceiling for horizontal lengths. The removal of ceiling tile and perhaps grid for access is reasonable.
