Exposed joists in a 1/2hr rated corridor.

For those curious, with the help of XC engineering, on p24-34 are the calcs to determine the fire rating of exposed wood joists and plywood. Sheet A800, has the following detail. Revit files here. All open source. Cheers. about OpeningDesign: http://openingdesign.com/about/

Stair structure at VB and 1B

Thanks Guys. In some AHJs it looks like the stairs themselves can be wood. https://www.woodworks.org/experttip/construction-material-requirements-framing-stairs-landings-wood-frame-structures-fire-resistance-rated-assembly-required/

Stair structure at VB and 1B

We have a Type VB (R-2) over a Type 1B (S-2) basement. We're looking to do the stairs towers with studs. I would imagine on the VB levels we can do wood studs. I assume we have to use metal studs at the S-2 level, correct? Or could we use wood studs here, as well? Thanks, Ryan

Is an 'opening' that has the same rating as the wall, really an 'opening'?

Is it possible to have 'openings' in a double fire wall right at the property line, if the fire doors in the walls have the same rating as the wall itself? I guess I understood if the 'opening' has the same rating as the wall itself, its not really considered an opening as defined per 705.8...

A fire area that cross multiple property boundaries?

Is there any means in the code to have (1) fire area cross multiple property boundaries? Or do you need a firewall at each property boundary? And if a firewall is required, possible to have fire rated doors in the firewall if 706.2 Structural Stability is addressed. --- Specific question...

Combustible foam on exterior wall/roof near property line

In the scenario below, possible to use EPS or Polyiso on the roof? I assume it is if it meets 2603.6 Roofing Possible to use EIFS on that 1st floor wall? I assume it is because of 2603.4 Thermal Barrier. That is, the concrete acts as the the 'thermal barrier'.

    Noncombustible wall behind cookline

I have worked on Type VB restaurants with full sprinklers. I've heard a number of times, through various sources, that the wall behind the cookline needs to be non-combustible. It makes sense, but can anyone point me to the code that calls this out specifically. I'd just like to educated...

Exposed joists in a 1/2hr rated corridor.

Per TABLE 722.6.2(1) TIME ASSIGNED TO WALLBOARD MEMBRANES, it looks like we can go with (2) layers of 19/32-inch wood structural panel bonded with exterior glue as well, to achieve that 30 minute. That is, assuming exposed heavy timber will work for the AHJ.

Exposed joists in a 1/2hr rated corridor.

Gotcha.. Will give it a try and report back!

Exposed joists in a 1/2hr rated corridor.

But if the joist's themselves are heavy timber (with an integral 1hr rating themselves) it would seem you wouldn't need to 'wrap' them.

Exposed joists in a 1/2hr rated corridor.

ugg. 1/2 is so minimal, common sense wise, you'd think you could achieve this rating with heavy timber joists and a gyp bd. covered sheathing. Beyond the prescriptive application of ul ratings, is there a way to approach this via a 'calculated' approach i wonder?

Exposed joists in a 1/2hr rated corridor.

So we have a Type VB w/ R-2 occupancy. I would like to have exposed floor joists in the corridors. --- First off, per TABLE 1020.1 CORRIDOR FIRE-RESISTANCE RATING it looks like the corridors need to be 0.5hr rated. Is this a correct reading? Dumb question, i assume this applies to the...

    (2) Type A units required but (4) Different Unit Types.

Let's say code requires your building to have (2) Type A units. Since it says you should distribute these units across the various unit types, what happens when you have (4) different unit types. Is there a stipulation on which (2) out of the (4) unit types should be Type A?

I have a sprinkled 3 story type VB, R-2 occupancy above basement parking S-2. The R-2 is maxed out area wise for a VB The area of the S-2 basement parking is larger than the allowable sf footprint for a type vb. So is the only approach in this scenario to use a 3hr horizontal seperation, and...
