Type I Hood Make Up Air Duct Material

Thank you. This appears to go along with the intent of the code. I see no reason why the duct would need to remain non-combustible after the 18" since there is no longer a requirement for clearances after 18" either. It wouldn't make sense to require all non-combustible duct, but then not have...

Type I Hood Make Up Air Duct Material

2012 IMC. Designer is proposing to install flammable flexible air duct material for make up air at a Type I hood. This will ultimately be directly connected to the hood. The plans show a 24" section of "start up" steel duct, then the flexible duct connects to that so that the flammable duct...

    Site Plan Copyright Infringement

I'll discuss with the legal department, and I was only kidding about contacting the original designer on a 15 year old plan (he, he). If there are not "automatic copyrights" then it is probably not a issue. Thanks all!

    Site Plan Copyright Infringement

I have in front of me a site plan drawn by a designer from 15+ years ago being utilized for a current project by a different designer. The original designer's name is sill on the plan. I don't know how he got it, except that I know he used to work for the guy. Would this be considered copyright...

    CBO Legal/Management Study Guide

I recall one quesion regarding budgeting that I never did figure out the answer to. I looked everywhere I could think of following the test, but to no avail.

    NFPA thinks I'm stupid???

They wouldn't need to upsell if they would stop sending the junk mail.

    IBC or IRC?

We had those in a previous life. Same as fatboy. The only thing we had them do to the house (as I recall) was provide a commercial threshold at the entrance, and an accessible porta potty. It was not an R-3/B because no one was living in it. Also, an R occupancy is more hazardous than a B.

Door opening height - does threshold height count in measurement?

Did someone cut the bottom of the door off? Are these custom doors that are made too short? Are they measuring from the upper door stop to the top of the threshold? If the door is its original size, then I doubt it is 79 1/2" tall. At any rate, they are grasping at straws.

2012 IBC Section 903.2.8 vs. Table 508.4 Non-sprinklered Residential Occupancies

Suppose you have no change of occupancy consisting of a business occupancy on the main level of a building, but the developer wants to change the second floor to residential units? It would appear that the the IEBC sections that mtlogcabin referenced would require a horizontal separatation...

    UL-181 tape for ducts

The supply house may supply only a UL rated tape, but which UL do they have. It seems to me that I've seen UL rated tape that wasn't 181 but rather some other number, but I don't recall where I've seen it. Hopefully not on some job site somewhere. If I recall, the UL was for some other purpose...

    Old stairs

Regardless of the rise and run minimums and maximums, the variation in riser heights is the key to safety. Whether or not the code in the day was 8/9, 7/10 or whatever, I really doubt that the variations you have there EVER met code. It is a trip hazard. Didn't the 3/8" variations come in with...

Roof flashing for gas appliance vents

The intent of the clearances to combustibles is so that things won't catch fire. If the temperatures are good, then so am I.

Bonus trusses & Habitable Attics ???

Washington State has an amendment adding to the definition "conditioned space". If it is not conditioned, no EERO needed. The part that baffles me where it states "enclosed by a roof" (or something to that effect). Many of the bonus rooms we see have roof on the sides, but gables on the ends...

Why I became a Facebook fan today

We had a front page story once of a car that had run into a house. It showed the before and after pics, with the after being in the process of installing new siding. You could see the code violation right there in the picture of installing siding without house wrap. We went there and imdediatley...

    F-1 vs F-2 Ocupancy

cda, (Also any "S" ???? In the building...) There are no rooms one would classify separately as "S". This is a large open structure and for the most part, it is all an F. They have other existing buildings on site that are S occupancies. They have a lunch room, rest rooms, and equipment...

    F-1 vs F-2 Ocupancy

I would tend to think that both F-1 and F-2 would contain a significant amout of cardboard. I believe the main difference between the two would be the process involved more that the contents. F-2 states that the issue is if "during...packaging, processing" etc, there is not a significant fire...

    F-1 vs F-2 Ocupancy

2009 IBC. Apple packing plant at 86,000 sq ft. Originally submitted as an F-1, with contruction type II-A and fully sprinklered in order to get the building area, and fire area covered. There are no area increases for frontage, only sprinklers. Fine. Plans do not show 1 hr rating of primary and...

Electric Water Heater on Non Combustible Surface

Sorry all, Nothing like starting an urban legend... turns out the water heater was a gas water heater instead of electric.

Electric Water Heater on Non Combustible Surface

Anyone ever read in the installation manual for an electric water heater the requirement that it be installed on a hard, non combustible surface? I don't have a manual to refer to, and this is coming from an adjacent jurisdiction, but the inspector had the builder remove the R-10 foam pad from...

    Intermediate Handrails at Monumental Stairs

I'm saying that if the 2 outside areas of the stairway are not to be included, and you only count the 30" areas next to the handrails that are included, you only end up with: 3 handrails, the middle one has 30" on each side of it, the other 2 handrails will only add (1) 30" area next to them...
